benefits

A Union is about so much more than contract negotiations - it’s also about taking care of one another. This page lists special benefits that one can only access as a PFF member as well as protections and discounts from the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the AFL-CIO, under which PFF operates. If you haven’t yet joined PFF, visit the BELONG page on this site.

For any questions about Union benefits, contact PFF Organizer, Debbie Forward, at debbieforward1@gmail.com, or call during the regular school day at 760-803-4973.

BENEFITS CREATED by PFF for PFF MEMBERS

Conference Funding

Funds are for conference registration fees and available on a first-come, first-served basis. For the academic year 2019 - 2020, each PFF member is eligible for an allotment of up to $500, regardless of the number of trips requested.

For details and application, visit the DOCUMENTS page.

Emergency Funding

Financial assistance is available for PFF part-time or full-time faculty members in need due to an emergency. Examples of situations that create unforeseen financial challenges include (but are not limited to):

  • Illness or accident, of oneself or immediate family member, that creates loss of wages

    and/or exceptional medical bills

  • House fire

  • Car accident or major repairs

  • Victim of a crime

  • Unexpected and necessary bill, such as a plumbing catastrophe

Keep in mind that this funding is for one-time financial hardship and is not intended as general, ongoing financial help.

This is a pilot program for the 2019-20 academic year. An ad hoc committee will determine the amount of funds to be distributed, which is up to $500 for a Union member within an academic year. Members may apply by sending a letter plainly explaining his/her emergency need, understanding that the committee may request more information. Hard copy letters with an inked signature should be directed to either PFF Co-President, Barbara Baer or Teresa Laughlin.

Requests will be fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Additional resources are available through the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council, and both EASE and AFT offer financial counseling services.

Scholarships

Immediate family members of a PFF member have the opportunity to apply for academic scholarships of up to $1000 for the upcoming academic year. You may apply if you meet the following criteria:

  • Will attend a public institution of higher learning in Fall, 2020

  • Has a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0

  • Must be a family member of a PFF Union Member; spouse, child, domestic partner

  • Submit a cover letter with evidence of academic achievement and commitment to a union or union values

The application date will be announced in Spring, 2020. Until then, questions can be emailed to pffscholarship@gmail.com or you may phone the committee at (760) 295-5450.
