Negotiations Update

3/14/24

At today’s meeting (on National Pi Day) we brought a pie to share with the District team along with a visual illustration of the discrepancy between full- and part-time paid office hours. We discussed the following:

  • District Counterproposal (Article 20- Working Conditions)

  • The District’s counter included some different perspectives than our proposal on the assignment of office space, leading to some productive conversation with the District about need and intent. Their counter also included some suggested clarification on notification of evaluation results that would impact priority number, collaboration between chairs and deans to ensure faculty loads are addressed, and ongoing discussion related to notification periods of changes in operational hours.

  • PFF Counterproposal (Article 15- Compensation)

  • In our counterproposal to the District’s last counter, we:

  • added some clarifying language related to the CTE pay parity sections

  • renewed and strengthened our proposals related to summer office hours for FT and PT faculty, proportional office hour pay for PT faculty, and a raise for all faculty. We continue to remind the District of their previous statements related to employee compensation and the District’s financial health and highlight the interests of our unit related to increased compensation.

  • PFF Counterproposal (Appendix F- Reassigned Time and Faculty Stipends)

  • We ran out of time at this meeting to present our planned counterproposal for Appendix F. We discussed the possibility of scheduling an additional short Zoom meeting with both teams before our next scheduled meeting in order to be able to present this counterproposal to the District.

  • Discussion Items:

  • Faculty who has been receiving the wrong amount of reassigned time and need for remedy. District will talk to the relevant VP and get back to us.

  • DRC Chair- we requested future discussion about extending the current pilot MOU for DRC department chair. We expect to start these conversations in April.

  • Calendar- we discussed some of the feedback and questions we’ve received about the dangling Mondays and expressed interest in ensuring everyone understands implications and options before calendars are negotiated in the future. We still need to work on solutions for the insufficient Mondays in Spring 25 and Spring 26. PFF is gathering feedback from faculty via the Senate and PFF.

  • CALM- we inquired about the expected MOU. We agreed there is a mutual interest in meeting with relevant faculty coordinators and the Dean to continue discussions related to reassigned time and grant proposals related to compensation.

  • Grievance related to workload

  • The District scheduled two class caps meetings for May and June. We are still hoping to meet sooner than that.

At our next scheduled meeting with the District on 4/11/24 we expect the following:

  • District counterproposal for Article 15 (and hopefully Appendix F if we have a chance to schedule an extra meeting)

  • PFF counterproposal for Article 20 (and present counter for Appendix F if we haven’t had a chance to do so prior to this meeting)

  • District followup on the discussion items listed above
