A Statement of Values, Fall 2024

We need each other now more than ever. Union means union. We stand together, united, for our students, our faculty, and all members of Team Palomar. Just as we did yesterday. Just as we will tomorrow. In the post-election space, it’s important for us to reaffirm our values and speak to the work ahead.

The Palomar Faculty Federation takes very seriously its role in safeguarding faculty working conditions. A quick glance at the table of contents of our faculty contract showcases our areas of focus—academic freedom, non-discrimination, Union rights, safety, and working conditions being some among many. Further, student learning conditions are faculty working conditions. The learning environment from the classroom to the campus are within our sphere of care.

As such, we want to affirm that we care that all faculty and students can inhabit places of work and study that are safe, secure, and accessible, and we will use our position to ensure that remains so. Further, we care that our LGBTQIA+ faculty and students can come to a campus that is safe and uplifting, and we will use our position to ensure that remains so. We care that immigrants, family members of immigrants, and descendants of immigrants, of all statuses, within our community are affirmed, supported, and respected, and we will use our position to ensure that remains so. To quote Greg Smith, Chancellor of SDCCD, the Community College District to our south, “any threat to the safety, well-being, and humanity of any student, employee, or community member diminishes our ability to fulfill our mission and undermines our purpose.”

As PFF leaders, we will use our voice, privilege, and knowledge to fulfill our responsibilities to our faculty, students, and all members of our community. To speak more about any of this, about what we can do and what you can do, please don’t hesitate to connect with PFF leaders.

Student learning conditions are faculty working conditions, and we will never waver in support of all that means.
