Hello and happy summer from your Negotiations Team!
~~~
First, a quick summer overview…
Our work on the 24-25 reopeners is ongoing! We have a total of five negotiations sessions planned this summer: 2 regular meetings in June and 3 longs ones in August to finalize the 24-25 reopeners:
🗓️ June 10th from 8am-10am
🗓️ June 16th from 11am-12pm
🗓️ August 7th from 9am-3pm
🗓️ August 11th from 9am-3pm
🗓️ August 15th from 9am-3pm
The District informed us that they had decided to retract their sunshining of Article 4 and would wait until the 3-year contract to do any additional work on Article 4. For reference, here are notes for our 24-25 reopeners:
And now for the good news! 🙂
At today’s negotiations meeting, we made some good progress:
📌Article 12
The District presented their third counter for Article 12. During caucus, we adjusted and presented our third counter. The District said they would need to take some time to look at the new language before countering again. We expect to see their counter at our next negotiations meeting on Monday, June 16th.
📌Article 20
PFF presented its third counter for Article 20 noting we are returning to the original language for the final pieces of this article concerning equity for PT faculty in retirement. While the District’s most recent offer provided some alignment with full-time faculty language, we emphasized the importance of equity and protecting a small but significant group of part-time faculty. Maintaining the status quo allows these faculty to retain their PN upon retirement and possible return (if rehired by the Department). The District is amenable but would like to review the language.
✅TERB Docs
The District and PFF finally came to an agreement on our new TERB forms 🎉 The contentious part of these new forms was the new Chair/Dean form to be used on part-time faculty, tenure-track, and peer evaluations. There are three standards on the new Chair/Dean form: Standard #1 the Learning Environment, Standard #2 Student Support and Success, and Standard #3 Institutional Engagement. We are pleased to announce that the District did respect PFF’s protection of faculty purview for Standard #1.
🚫MOU_TERB Chair Challenge Consistency
The District shared that they would not be able to agree to this MOU because it would give more rights to tenure-track faculty than to permanent employees. If there are concerns, the process needs to be adhered to fairly and equitably. The District maintained that any challenges could be resolved as side letters and would not need to be addressed in a full change as the MOU presents.
Lastly, PFF presented a number of MOUs that are expiring this semester and need to be extended:
MOU_Office Hours Parity extension
MOU_AB 1705 Coordinators extension
MOU_Large Class Stipend extension
MOU_Water Tech Expansion extension (full MOU to be presented at the next meeting)
This was a longer meeting, but we were able to accomplish quite a bit. We hope to finalize these last bits at our next meeting so that our August meetings can be focused on Articles 15 and 16 to close out the reopeners before the Fall semester begins.
Next Meeting: Monday, June 16th
Signing off—but still here for every comma, clause, and cause.
